ARTilLE  I. 

Name. 

liie  Society  shall  be  kiiosvi  by  the  name  and  title  of 
"The  National  Society  of  the  Colonial  Daughters  of 
America. ' ' 

ARICLE  II. 
Membership. 

An  applicant  to  be  eligible  to  membership  must  have 
been  invited  and  proposed  by  one  member,  and  seconded 
by  another  member  of  the  society,  to  whom  she  is  well 
known.  She  must  have  attained  her  sixteenth  year; 
must  be  of  good  moral  character  and  standing  and  must 
be  acceptable  to  the  society.  She  must  furnish  written 
proofs  of  her  Colonial  descent  from  an  Ancestor  who 
served  in  any  of  the  battles  under  Colonial  authority,  or 
who  filled  the  office  of  Governor,  Ivieutenant  Governor, 
member  or  delegate  to  Council  or  Assembly,  or  member 
of  House  of  Burgesses,  or  who  served  as  military  officer 
or  Naval  Marine  officer  in  the  service  of  the  Colonies,  or 
under  the  Banner  of  Great  Britain  in  North  America  in 
the  wars  in  which  said  Colonies  participated,  or  who 
furnished  troops  or  funds,  or  from  the   Historic  Found- 


ers  (1606  to  1616) ;  of  the  first  English  Colony  at  James- 
town; Incorporators  named  in  the  Royal  Charters;  tlie 
Judges  of  the  Superior  Courts  of  Law  f.nd  Equity;  the 
Commissary  of  any  of  the  Bishops  of  Ivondon  the  trustees 
of  William  and  Mary  College  designated  in  Royal  Char- 
ter of  1693  who  resided  in  America,  and  the  Presidents 
and  Rectors  of  that  College.  Members  of  the  Commit- 
tee of  Safety  of  the  Continental  Congress  of  1774,  i775 
and  1776;  signers  of  the  Declaration  of  Independence. 
Colonsits  and  officials  in  other  colonies  or  states  of  equiv- 
alent rank  with  the  above. 

ARTICLE  ill. 

The  object  of  the  National  Society  of  the  Colonial 
Daughters  of  America  is  to  perpetuate  in  enduring  from 
the  memory  of  the  women  of  the  Colonial  period  from 
1607  to  1776  the  noble  women  who  established  homes, 
founded  families,  introduced  refinement  and  culture  and 
made  sound  morals  permanent  occupants  of  our  country. 

It  shall  be  a  regulation  that  members  of  the  National 
Society  Colonial  Daughters  of  A  merica,  when  practica- 
ble, shall  celebrate  events  ot  Colonial  history  relating  to 
women.  They  shall  in  every  way  foster  the  desire  now 
more  prevalent  among  women  of  intellectuality  and  re- 
finement, to  do  honor  and  justice  to  the  deeds  of  women.

The  tenure  of  office  held  by  members  of  the  National 
Kxecutive  Board  is  for  life. 

The  Offices  of  President  General,  Secretary  General, 
Registrar  and  Treasurer  General,  Chairman  General, 
Historian  General  and  Vice  President  General  vacated  by 
any  of  the  present  members  of  the  National  Executive 
Board,  will  be  filled  in  the  future,  by  the  votes  of  Dele- 
gates from    State   Societies,    at  the    National    meetings. 

The  Vice  President  General  will  cooperate  with  the 
National  officers. 

State  Regents  and  other  officers  may  be  appointed  by 
President  General,  or  elected. 


ARTICLE  V. 

The  National  Advisory  Board  is  composed  of  the  mem- 
bers of  the  National  Executive  Board,  National  Organiz- 
ing Regents,  State  Regents  and  such  other  members  as 
may  be  appointed  by  the  President  General.  The  duty 
of  the  Natio  n.l  Advisory  Board  will  be  to  introduce  new 
measures  a  ad  have  same  voted  upon  at  the  annual  meet- 
ings, and  to  extend  the  membership  of  the  society,  in 
cooperation  with  the  National  Organizing  Regents. 

ARTICLE  VI. 

The  National  Executive  Board  has  full  power  to  pass 
on  any  measure  finally,  thereby  making  it  a  law,  or  to 
revoke  any  measure  now  in  effect  should  such  measure 
be  proven  detrimental  in  the  opinion  of  the  National 
Executive  Board. 

ARTICLE  VII. 

Finances 

During  the  continued  absence  or  disabitity  of  the 
Treasurer  General,  the  President  General  shall  assume 
the  duties  of  said  ofl&ce  with  full  power  to  act  until  such 
time  as  she  may  appoint  her  successor.  All  moneys, 
checks  records,  lineage  blanks,  etc.,  become  the  prop- 
erty of  the  President  General. 

The  Treasurer  General  shall  collect  and  keep  the 
funds  of  the  National  Society  Colonial  Daughters  of

America  on  deposit  in  bank  to  the  credit  of  the  National 
Society  of  Colonial  Daughters  of  America.  Such  funds 
shall  be  drawn  on  the  check  of  the  Treasurer  General, 
and  upon  the  check  of  the  President  General  during  dis- 
ability of  Treasurer  General  or  vacancy  of  the  office,  as 
provided  for. 

The  Registrar  General  shall  examine  all  L/ineage 
papers  and  in  connection  with  the  National  Executive 
Board  shall  pass  upon  and  decide  as  to  validity  of  claims 
to  eligibility.  She  shall  issue  permits  for  Insignia  and 
additional  Ancestral  Bars. 

The  Historian  General  shall  keep  a  record  of  notable 
Colonial  celebrations. 

The  Secretary  General  shall  conduct  the  correspond- 
ence, keep  records,  seal,  official  papers,  issue  applica- 
tion lineage  blanks,  shall  affix  seal  to  every  certificate  of 
membership.  She  shall  keep  a  record  of  all  proceedings 
of  the  society. 

The  Chairman  General  shall  cooperate  with  the  other 
members  of  the  National  Executive  Board. 

Branch  Courts  are  under  jurisdiction  of  State  Regents. 
A  National  or  State  Officer  may  hold  two  offices. 


The  iniation  fee  shall  be  three  dollars,  and  the  annual 
dues  two  dollars.  Payment  at  anyone  time  of  one  hundred 
dollars  shall  entitle  the  member  so  paying  to  Hereditary 
Life  membership;  Life  Membership  ^25;  Insignia  (Pin,) 
X  additional  bars  75  cents  each;  certificate  $1.00.  If 
^ny  member  refuses,  or  neglects  to  pay  her  dues  for  two 
consecutive  years  her  name  may  be  stricken  from  the  roll 
of  membership. 

Any  member  of  the  National  Society  may  be  requested 
to  resign  by  the  Secretary  General  or  by  direction  of  the 
Executive  Board;  or  any  member  of  a  state  society  may 
be  requested  to  resign  by  State  Regent  for  speech  or 
action  detrimental  to  the  interests  of  the  society. 

The  surrender  of  the  charter  of  a  state  may  be  de- 
manded should  such  action  be  deemed  necessary  for  the 
welfare  of  the  society;  this  to  be  decided  by  the  General 
Assembly  at  Annual  meeting.  Pending  the  meeting 
same  miy  be  suspended  by  the  President  General. 

Authority  to  organize  state  societies  may  be  obtained 
from  the  President  General.  The  President  General  will 
preside  at  the  General  Assembly  or  annual  meetings,  in 
her  absence  the  next  in  rank  will  preside.  Meetings 
will  be  held  quarterly  or  at  call  of  President  General. 

No  alterations;  changes  in  constitution  or  of  the  by- 
laws may  be  made  without  the  consent  of  President  Gen- 
eral and  National  Executive  Board.
